Oops! Bank Mistakenly Starts Foreclosure Process On Wrong House | Weird Facts

weird facts
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A Kissimmee homeowner was in England when he learned a Florida bank had mistakenly started foreclosure proceedings on his house.

As it turns out, Denroy Bell didn't even have a mortgage with the bank, Citi-Residential. The bank admitted that it's dealing with so many foreclosures in Central Florida that it made a mistake.

Bell's neighbor called him when she saw the locks being changed and the pool empty.

"It was like the army came up and took over the house," Esther Goshop, a neighbor, said.

Bell lives primarily in London and rents out his home when he's not in Florida. He said the bank apologized for the inconvenience.

Bell wants the company to pay to clean up the pool and change the locks back.

NASCAR Fan Gets Posthumous Spin Around the Track | Weird Facts

weird facts
TALENT, Ore. — Big George Helms had tickets for last weekend's NASCAR race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but died before he got to use them. He still made it to the track, though.

At 6-foot-5 and 400 pounds, Helms wouldn't have been able to fit into a race car. But after his death from a heart attack Dec. 28, loved ones decided to try to fulfill the 54-year-old's dream of participating in a NASCAR race, and arranged for the former logger's ashes to be driven around the track.

"His friends came up to us during the memorial service and asked us if they could take his ashes to the NASCAR race," said Helms' mother, Dixie Helms. "I said 'He'd love that.'"

Driver Mike Harmon taped Helms' urn to the fire extinguisher of his Nationwide Series car during practice last Friday. He told ESPN he could hear someone squealing when he went through a couple of turns.

"I swear I did," Harmon said. "I heard a noise I've never heard before. It happened just one time, through Turns 1 and 2."

Mara Brodeur, a friend who accompanied the urn to Las Vegas, called Helms' family afterward to describe how it went.

"It put tears in my eyes," said Helms' younger brother, Allen.

And Helms will be at the track's next race, in spirit anyway. His friends spread some of his ashes at the speedway before returning the rest to his mother.

Parents Foil Drinking Party After Checking Daughter's MySpace Page | Weird Facts

weird facts
A children's advocate Monday applauded the actions of two parents who learned of a party their daughter was hosting by monitoring her MySpace page and then calling police.

Marathon County sheriff's deputies issued 29 underage drinking citations Friday night after the town of Wausau couple learned of the party while they were in Minnesota and then subsequently returned to Wausau, according to a Sheriff's Department report.

The parents first stopped at the Sheriff's Department at about 10:30 p.m. Friday, spoke with officers and then went home to verify that there indeed was a party. After doing so, they called police back and the father blocked the driveway so no one could leave by car.

The deputies arrived, issued the citations and then arrangements were made to give the partygoers, which ranged in age from 17 to 20, a safe ride home.

No one admitted to supplying the alcohol and the majority of those cited did not have previous alcohol-related offenses, Sheriff's Lt. Randy Albert said.

The parents did not return phone messages left on Monday.

Linda Salzman, manager of the nonprofit Family Resource Center, 705 S. 24th Ave. in Wausau, said educators there encourage parents to call police when necessary.

"I just think that it's a perfect natural consequence for the kids," Salzman said. "We're the teachers as parents. We need to constantly be teaching and showing them the right way. They will make mistakes and that's when we need to step in and give them consequences. That's how we all learn."

With cell phones and the Internet, kids can "get something going" quickly, she said. When leaving older teens home alone, it's important for parents to set precise ground rules and to check in on them.

"It's not a matter of trust, it's a matter of safety," Salzman said. Calling the police sometimes "just puts a scare in kids, but often that's what they need."

An Iranian Court Orders a Man to Give His Wife 124,000 Roses | Weird Facts

weird facts
An Iranian court has ordered a man to give his wife the 124,000 roses that he promised in her dowry, after she filed a complaint to claim it, reports say.

The woman said she was claiming the dowry because her "very stingy husband" would not even pay for a cup of coffee, according to the E'temad newspaper.

The court has seized the man's flat until he produces all of the roses.

Under Iranian law, a woman can claim her dowry, or mahr, at any time during a marriage or when getting divorced.

The gift becomes the property of the wife to do whatever she likes with.

It is required in order for the marriage contract and the marriage itself to be valid.

According to E'temad, the woman, identified as Hengameh, decided to claim her entire dowry of 124,000 red roses after 10 years of marriage to "punish her very stingy husband".

"Shortly after marriage, I realised that Shahin was very cheap," she told the newspaper. "He even refused to pay for my coffee if we went to a cafe or restaurant."

Shahin told the court he could only afford to give her five roses a day and complained that it was his wife's "billionaire friends who had put such ideas in her head".

But the judge rejected Shahin's pleas and ordered his $64,000 (£33,000) flat to be confiscated until he has bought them all.

A long-stemmed rose costs about $2 (£1.09) in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

It is common in Iran to offer gold coins or property as mahr. An Iranian man can end up in jail for dowry debts.

Weird Facts: Counterfeiters Learn How To Make Fake Ferrari's

weird facts
ROME (Reuters) - Italians are used to buying bogus Gucci bags or Rolex watches to look stylish but police found a new height of craftsmanship and cunning when they broke up a ring selling fake Ferrari cars for a fraction of the real price.

Police accused 15 people of building the blood red sports cars and selling them to car fanatics on a budget, most of whom knew they were buying a counterfeit classic.

Car body workers who police called "very able" cobbled together mostly fake parts and a few original components. They used body parts from other makes of automobiles, such as chassis, roofs, hoods, trunks and doors.

The body parts were modified to look like Ferrari classics such as the 328 Gtb, which went out of production in the late 1980s.

Some of the cars sold for about 20,000 euros, about a tenth of the going price for some versions.

Police confiscated 21 cars, 14 of which had already been sold, and seven in production in Sicilian garages.
